Wonderful
Memories!
"Many
of you have seen my Bios/Resumes/Statements where I refer to my Grandfather,
the Canadian artist. Well I received a delightful phone call and email
from a cousin back home when I sent her a Christmas card with this image
on it, of a painting I did when I was 12 years old. It is still in my
collection.
She sent
me this image of a painting in her collection that she inherited, by our
Grandfather! I cannot recall ever seeing it before! How wonderful!
I'm sure
you've heard me say that "he used to set me up beside him when he
was painting, and tell me to 'paint what you see'; the best advice I ever
got!" Well this must be the painting he did when I did mine above.
He had a home right on Lake Ontario in Mimico, near Toronto. I remember
painting beside him on that day! I do remember asking for advice; I wasn't
sure I should paint a cloud purple. He said: "What colour do you
see?" I said "Purple". He said: "So paint what you
see!" And that is how the clouds became purple! I don't believe I
got any other help from him, if you know what I mean. It was not my nature
to let him paint on my painting! But this is wonderful to see them together.
Thanks Robin.
Here
is our dear "Poppy"! John Hamm.
This
was the days before pochade boxes! Notice how he nailed some old sticks
together to make it work. He used to take groups of painters to Gloucester
MA to paint back in the ~1930's and I have an old 16mm film (also on a
videocassette) that he took on one of those trips. Those of you who paint
there now would see some differences! But some things don't change; he
was sitting out in a hayfield somewhere in Ontario like we do now!"
